How would you like to cycle 2400 feet halfway up a mountain? Sound daunting? Actually, it's a lot easier than it sounds (or as challenging if you'd like it to be). There are three elements to making climbing mountain on a bicycle a piece of cake. One is a good, very light mountain bike. The second is the stipulation that is has plenty of 'spinning gears' on its cassette, and the third is that the road is a switchback, or at least has plenty of wide, generous curves.
Even if you're not in the greatest shape (I'm certainly not) it's almost easier to cycle up a mountain than it is to walk- unfortunately, it can even be slower! The critical element to ascending dizzying heights with very little effort is your spin gear setup. In old parlance, that means 'first,' 'second,' and so on. Things are defined a little more technically these days because of trail riding, but basically if you have easy spin gears (meaning minimal torque) and a light bike, you can practically ride all day. In fact, if at these speeds you cannot engage in conversation easily during a climb, you will at some point or another approach your wall- the point where your body demands rest.
The other element, the road, is critical though. For no matter how well built and light the mountain bike is, a relentless non-stop upward slope will eventually pull the cyclist back and result in an increase of constant torque, no matter how low the gear. Curves and switchback give a cyclist enough of a pocket of leveling out to allow rest and recovery for the next bend.
It's pretty easy to go up those lovely mountains on your mountain bike if you have a nice road. You don't have to a pro, and the rewards are great.
